RACHEL ZOE, JILL LINCOLN & JORDAN JOHNSON

FADE IN:

INT. RACHEL ZOE’S OFFICE, RACHEL ZOE INC., LOS ANGELES — MORNING

Sunlight bathes RACHEL ZOE’s bright, airy office at her company’s Melrose Avenue headquarters. Stacks of fashionable coffee table books and chrome-accented furniture decorate the room. JILL LINCOLN and JORDAN JOHNSON enter, sit next to one another on a sofa opposite RACHEL’s desk, and talk amongst themselves.

CUT TO:

Minutes later, RACHEL enters, greets JILL and JORDAN, and sits in an armchair beside them.

RACHEL
There’s something you guys bring to the job that is so relevant, current, young, modern, and cool. You literally eat, sleep, and breathe styling, which is what I did for more than 15 years. Styling is my core, and was my baby until I became a designer. I still love styling, and I’m always going to do it. But I can’t without an incredible team, without you guys. [The company] is not what it was when Jordan started with me, in my garage.

JORDAN
I’ve seen a lot of different people work here, and no one has been like Jill. She brought something new to the table, an editorial sensibility.

RACHEL
And that was really cool for us. Some New York blood. We needed that.

JILL
I met Rachel [for an interview] at the Crosby Street Hotel [in New York City], and then it all happened in, like, a week. I needed a life change. And I thought, “All right, why not?”

RACHEL
Honestly, you both are your own functioning entity on a daily basis. I’ve been traveling a lot, and I’ve been working on the collection, so I’m not able to be as hands on as I used to be. But at the same time, I’m here when asked and needed. Sometimes, a client will say, “We need Rachel!,” and then they work with you guys and they say, “Okay, we’re good. We’re fine.” [to JILL] You’ve gotten a lot softer since you’ve been here.

JORDAN
She doesn’t want anyone to know she’s gotten softer! She’s like a big teddy bear.
She loves hugs now —

RACHEL
Hugs, animals, babies [JILL and JORDAN laugh]. I think what happened was you started to rub off on each other. There used to be a divide; this client is Jill’s, that client is Jordan’s. Now, you both do everybody and it’s so nice.

CUT TO:

A cute assistant enters, carrying a Venti Starbucks beverage. She hands the cup to RACHEL.

JORDAN
We compliment each other very well.

RACHEL
I totally agree, it’s very yin and yang. You’re weirdly sensitive to each other’s needs. Jordan’s been known to be sensitive [laughs], and Jill’s been known to be —

JILL
Jordan’s the wife, and I’m the husband.

RACHEL
A hundred percent [ALL laugh]. You are both an incredible representation of my initial vision as a stylist and as a brand, but you bring your own ideas to everything.

JILL
The great thing, too, is we’re so different —

RACHEL
Yeah, I agree.

JILL
Which makes us better at what we do, and more able to adapt to clients’ different styles. We take ourselves out of the equation because —

RACHEL
You can’t dress everyone in chambray and loafers.

JORDAN
Nope.

RACHEL
A girl needs a good gown and a jumpsuit once in awhile [JILL and JORDAN laugh]. I will say both of your styles have developed much further since Skyler was born, because he is your style muse [JORDAN laughs]. Clearly, you take cues from how he dresses [laughs].

JORDAN
I think I actually copied Kaius’s jumpsuit yesterday.

RACHEL
There have been days where both of you have literally twinned with the boys. For me, styling is always about infusing glamour to the best of my ability, but never looking the same. I would do a suit as quickly as I would a ball gown. To be honest, the whole business has changed — in a really good way. There only used to be about eight stylists. Now, there are so many —

JILL
Everyone’s a stylist.

RACHEL
Everyone tries to be a stylist. The good ones separate themselves. Ultimately, talent wins — talent combined with disposition, comfort level, honesty, and loyalty will always win. There are a lot of great styling teams out there now. I always wonder what it would have been like if I had a counterpart. For you guys to have a constant sounding board is amazing. It’s much healthier. There’s strength in two.

JILL
When one of us starts spinning, we have the other one there to be like: I’m here to help — no one’s going to die, go get a drink, turn your phone off. I can definitely read Jordan’s mind, and vice versa.

JORDAN
Yeah, I can read Jill’s mind.

RACHEL
I can a hundred percent read your minds. A thousand percent. [points to JORDAN] This one I’ve known for 100 years, and [points to JILL] this one you can tell everything by her face. Jill gives everything away in so much as a breath.

JORDAN
Jill is incredibly easy to read… when she’s not happy [laughs].

JILL
I am not always the easiest person to be around for extended periods of time. My mother will tell you this for days [ALL laugh]. But it’s not like Jordan and I just like leave the office and say, “See ya!” I’ll be in the car for five minutes before I have to call her and tell her something.

RACHEL
You should see the pictures I get from the two of them, after either a rough job or a birthday. They’re like hanging upside down doing —

JILL and JORDAN [in unison]
Keg stands [BOTH laugh].

JILL
It’s a unique experience. There’s an incredible amount of trust in this situation.

JORDAN
That’s what’s so great about Rachel and [her husband] Rodger. You guys both love trying new things, and that’s awesome.

RACHEL
There’s a trust that I have with you guys that I’ve never had in my career, and certainly not in styling. When I’ve trusted in the past, I’ve been burned. You both are really on top of it, and the operation that you run in the studio is legit, credible, flawless, and seamless. From the beginning, something I’ve always tried to build is honesty and credibility with clients. You’re both very, very honest people, and that goes a long way.

JILL
We all have great taste. There are a lot of people in this town who have amazing taste, but with the three of us there’s —

RACHEL
Not a lot we can’t do. There is no typical day at Rachel Zoe Studio. That’s always my answer in any interview when I’m told, “Give me a day in your life.” I can’t. Every day is different.

JILL
Yesterday, we woke up at 5:00 in the morning. We filmed a pilot. We made requests for two press tours. We had a meeting with a potential client. We had a fitting —

RACHEL
Who’s getting on a plane next?

JORDAN
Jill.

RACHEL
Where are you going?

JILL
New York.

JORDAN
Today.

RACHEL
Toodles!
