Hairstylist Maranda remembers the photographer who brought her work to life.

Five years ago [in 2010], I worked with the photographer Mark Segal for the first time on a M, le magazine du Monde shoot with the model Malgosia [Bela]. He shot her on the rooftop of a rusty studio off of Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles.

It was scalding hot, and Malgosia was wearing those Alexander McQueen shoes — the ones that look like armadillos — that are impossible to move in.

She is one of the most beautiful women — SO EFFORTLESSLY COOL — and stood in front of the camera with such a strength in her eyes [that she looked like] a demon from another world.

Before this, I had never worked with a photographer who sees hair the way a hairstylist does.

Any way I moved Malgosia’s hair around, Mark captured it exactly how I imagined it would look [in print].

That doesn’t happen with every photographer, but when it does, the chemistry is almost like a song and dance.
