Groomer Kumi Craig on meeting the comedian who became a beloved client.

In 2000, I got a call from Matthias Clamer, a photographer whom I was working with at the time. He said, ‘I’m shooting this guy for Spin; his name is Jimmy Fallon and he’s a new cast member of Saturday Night Live.’

That shoot was my first published grooming job, ever.

We did two covers of Spin after that, and several other magazines, as well.

One day, I was on set with Jimmy at a Playboy shoot.

My mom was in town, and my sister had just gotten home from the hospital after having a baby. The three of us had dinner plans, but Jimmy’s manager asked if I could go with him to an interview he had after the shoot.

‘It’s going to be super quick,’ he said, but we ended up taping longer than expected. At one point Jimmy asked, ‘Are you okay? I know you have to leave.’

He told his driver to take me wherever I needed to go.

‘If your mom, sister, and the baby need a ride anywhere, take my car,’ he said. ‘You can have it all night.’

He’s always been that adorable, funny guy, but, more importantly, he’s kind and cares about people.

Now, whenever I go to his show with a guest, he’ll give me a big hug and say, ‘You’re with Kumi? She’s the best.’

You can’t get a better compliment in the world coming from Jimmy Fallon.
