Hairstylist Cervando Maldonado on a cut that went down in Hollywood history.

Reese Witherspoon in Rendition, the film that inspired her and Maldonado to create what would become a sought after hairstyle

A hairstyle can be more powerful than most people realize.

In 2007, while working at the Neil George Salon in Beverly Hills, my client Reese Witherspoon approached me about a major cut. She was preparing for the movie Rendition, and trying to figure out her character’s look.

Reese mentioned the idea of cutting bangs — I always collaborate with my clients, instead of just telling them what to do — and we agreed that would be a good style.

At the beginning of our appointment, her bangs were a little bit groovy. They stuck out in different directions, so the very first snip of her hair, which was down past her chin, was nerve-wracking. But as I added more weight to them they — and I — started to loosen up. Reese loved the cut, and debuted the look on the Golden Globes red carpet.

It became an instant sensation and was all over the Internet.

Regular — and new — clients requested those bangs. Browsing through industry magazines, I’d see Reese on their covers with ‘the haircut of the year.’

I couldn’t have been more proud.
