I was modeling for David LaChapelle a lot in the early 2000s, and, many times, he would shoot me in the nude. I used to be shy — when I go-go danced in the ‘90s, I’d never go topless — but David boosted my confidence.

He became obsessed with me being naked in public, and would tell me I looked better without clothes than with them.

One night, David and I were at a restaurant before going to a party for Azzedine Alaïa. We were pretty smashed, and he took off my dress — I wasn’t wearing underwear — and wouldn’t give it back.

He and I arrived at the party, which was co-hosted by Naomi Campbell and Stephanie Seymour, and the cameras went crazy. People were asking me why I was naked, and I’d reply,

‘Oh, I didn’t have time to borrow a dress from Alaïa.’

After that, showing up naked kind of became my thing. It could’ve gone very wrong, but, thankfully, the fashion crowd was on board right away.

Stephanie loved it, and Alaïa laughed. I’ve heard he still talks about that night.’
